What is sudoku?

Sudoku is a logic puzzle played on a 9×9 grid. The grid is divided into nine 3×3 boxes. Your goal is to fill every cell with a digit from 1 to 9, following one simple rule: no digit can repeat in any row, column, or 3×3 box.

Some cells start filled in. These givens constrain what can go where. The puzzle is solvable through pure logic. No guessing required. Every sudoku has exactly one solution.

The three rules: 1. Each row must contain 1 through 9 (no repeats) 2. Each column must contain 1 through 9 (no repeats) 3. Each 3×3 box must contain 1 through 9 (no repeats) That's it. Simple rules, deep puzzles.

How to play SudokuGlyph

The controls are straightforward:

1. Tap a cell

Select any empty cell on the grid. It highlights so you know where you're working.

2. Enter a digit

Tap 1 through 9 on the keypad. The digit fills the cell. Use Erase to clear it if you change your mind.

3. Use notes for candidates

Toggle Notes mode to place small pencil marks. These help you track which digits could go in a cell before you commit.

Features that make solving easier

SudokuGlyph has a few tools to help you solve without taking over the puzzle:

Conflict highlighting

Turn on Conflicts and the game highlights any duplicates in the same row, column, or box. Helps you spot mistakes immediately.

Notes mode

Place small candidate numbers in cells. Essential for harder puzzles where you need to track multiple possibilities.

Undo

Made a mistake? Undo steps back through your moves. Works for both regular entries and notes.

Optional assist tools

If you want a bit of help, there are optional tools. Using them counts in your stats, so purists can avoid them and still track their "clean" solves.

Auto Notes

Fills in pencil marks for all empty cells automatically. Shows every digit that's still possible in each cell based on current state.

Candidates

Shows which digits are valid for the currently selected cell. Useful when you're stuck and want to see your options.

Check

Validates your current entries against the solution. Highlights any mistakes so you can fix them.

Three difficulty modes

SudokuGlyph has Easy, Medium, and Hard puzzles. Each is a different puzzle for the day, so you can play all three if you want.

Easy

More givens, straightforward logic. Great for beginners or a quick solve. Most people finish in 5 to 10 minutes.

Medium

Fewer givens, requires more deduction. You'll need to use notes and think a few steps ahead. Typical solve time: 10 to 20 minutes.

Hard

Minimal givens, advanced techniques required. You might need strategies like naked pairs or hidden singles. Can take 20 minutes or more.

Sudoku strategy tips

Here are some techniques that help with harder puzzles:

Scan rows and columns

Look for rows or columns that are nearly complete. If 8 digits are placed, the 9th is obvious.

Box by box

Focus on one 3×3 box at a time. Find digits that can only go in one cell within that box.

Use pencil marks

Write candidate digits in empty cells. When a cell has only one candidate left, that's your answer.

Hidden singles

If a digit can only go in one place within a row, column, or box, it must go there, even if that cell has other candidates.

Why play daily sudoku?

Sudoku is one of the most studied puzzle types for cognitive benefits. Regular play exercises logical thinking, pattern recognition, and working memory. You're constantly holding constraints in your head and testing possibilities.

The daily format helps build a routine. One puzzle a day is sustainable. It's not a grind through hundreds of puzzles. Just a focused mental exercise you can do with your morning coffee or during a break.

There's also something satisfying about the daily ritual. Same time, same puzzle format, but a fresh challenge each day. It becomes part of your routine.
